  5. Ivory Coast dedicates a department to Agriculture at New University

The opening of the University of San-Pedro is scheduled for October 2021, it was indicated on Wednesday in the Council of Ministers which issued a decree to this effect. The 7th University of Côte d’Ivoire will welcome its first students for the 2021-2022 academic year.

This new university interests us at the highest point first of all because San Pedro is the second port city of the country, particularly active in the cocoa segment on which it competes with Abidjan. For example, last week, from 1 st June to 6 June, 18 000 tons of beans were shipped from San Pedro against 14,000 t of Abidjan.

Secondly, because the fields studied at the University of San-Pedro, as specified in the Council of Ministers, are closely linked to the favorite subjects treated by CommodAfrica : Agriculture, Fisheries Resources and Agro-Industry; Marine Sciences and Naval Construction; Transport and Logistics; Tourism and Hospitality (important outlets for quality local agricultural and agro-industrial products); Construction and public works.

In addition, it would include a training and research unit in medicine, backed by the future University Hospital Center (CHU) of San Pedro and a university residence with a capacity of 3,000 students, according to Professor Méité Méké.

Recall that the first stone of the University was laid on November 30, 2018 by the then Prime Minister, Amadou Gon Coulibaly, who then declared: “ It is not only a question of increasing the reception capacity of our higher education, but also to specialize the training of young people from each region of the country ” .

The work was then valued at FCFA 95 billion and the university was to open in October 2020.

The project is part of the decentralization program for public universities in Côte d’Ivoire.
